# Check for risks before developing “breast cancer,” the number one cancer among women

Doctor-reviewed · 3 September 2020 · 8 min read · Screening & Prevention

## Breast cancer

“Breast cancer” is one of the leading causes of death among Thai women. The incidence of cancer in Thailand increases every year, with about 40 cases per 100,000 women of reproductive age. Breast cancer can also occur in men, though it is much less common.

“Breast cancer” arises from abnormalities in the cells inside the milk ducts. These cells divide uncontrollably and may spread through the lymphatic system to lymph nodes or distant organs such as bones, lungs, and liver. Early risk detection before cancer develops allows for management and lifestyle changes to reduce risk. Knowing early is always better.

## Risk factors related to breast cancer

- Age: Women over 40 have an increased risk.
- Gender: Females have estrogen and progesterone hormones that can stimulate breast cancer cell growth.
- History of breast or ovarian cancer: Patients with cancer in one breast have a 3–4 times higher risk of developing cancer in the other breast. Ovarian cancer, related to hormones, also increases breast cancer risk.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Women who have never been pregnant or had their first child after age 30 have a slightly higher risk. Multiple pregnancies and early childbirth reduce breast cancer risk. Breastfeeding for more than one year may also help lower risk.
- Contraceptive use and hormones: Women who use contraceptives have a slightly increased breast cancer risk compared to non-users, but this risk disappears after stopping use for over 10 years.
- Lifestyle factors: Obesity, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption, high-fat diet, smoking, high radiation exposure, and stress.
